The map attributes is the map.dbf file. You could use Open Office calc (free download) to edit it, and remove unnecessary columns. However, you would need to keep a backup - in some cases, removing columns will prevent the map from loading.
Another solution is to use www.mapshaper.org - which may create a lighter weight map.dbf file.
You could try to experiment with these two approaches to reduce the size.
To check if there are unnecessary columns, you can also open the map.dbf in Excel. You should only need one or two columns (at a minimum, the ID with the unique map IDs).
