I found to import data manually using these instructions totally confusing - I don't understand why you would copy and paste the Map Area Names and Map Codes twice?? Very confusing!!! Why insert extra rows for the map names, then just re-add the map names again - with the codes again.. then DELETE them!!! Wow.. please clarify!!
1. Open both the ‘data.csv’ and ‘settings.csv’ files.
2. In the ‘data.csv’ file, copy the entire list of map area codes in row 1, from column L onwards. In the ‘settings.csv’ file, find the list of map area names at the bottom (below the header ‘NAMES’). Paste the map area codes in column B next to the map area names (through ‘paste special’ – ‘transpose’, to change the orientation to vertical). You should now have two vertical lists – first the names and then the corresponding codes (if the names and codes are the same, this step is not necessary).
3. Just below the header ‘NAMES’, insert new rows for each of the map area names in your data file. For example, if you are importing data for 20 map areas, insert 20 rows. Then copy and paste those map area names in the empty space created, in column A.
4. Scroll down to find the map area code corresponding to each of the names just added, and copy/paste this code next to the name in column B (again, if they are the same this step is not necessary). Then delete the entire row with the code you just copied/pasted.
5. You should now have a new arrangement with the map areas which are in your data file at the top of the list. Cut the list of map area codes from column B, and paste them back in to the ‘data.csv’ file (starting in column L, using ‘paste special’ – ‘transpose’).
Hi,
Sorry it should have clarified that this is for the USA map or World Map versions. If you are using the shapefile map or custom Flash map version, this step is not relevant.
For the shapefile map version, please see 'Instructions for manually setting up shapefiles' under http://www.statsilk.com/files/resources/User_Guide_StatPlanet.htm#_Toc37....
If you are using the USA or World Map version, you could use this approach. It is basically to re-arrange the order of country or US state names in the StatPlanet data file so it matches the order in your own data file. I think the confusing part might have been which map names it is referring to. In summary, first you copy the map area names from the data.csv file to settings.csv, then you add the map area names from your own data file, and in the end you copy the new re-arranged list back to the data.csv file. At no point are you copying/pasting the same list of map areas. It has been rewritten a bit. Hopefully the version below is more clear. It is a bit tedious, and perhaps there are better way of doing this.
Best,
Frank
======
1. Open the ‘data.csv’ file. Select and copy the entire list of map area codes in row 1, from column L onwards.
2. Open the ‘settings.csv’ file. Scroll down to the list of map area names at the bottom (below the header ‘NAMES’). Select the cell next to the first map area code in column B. For example, if the first map area name is in cell A466, then select the adjacent cell B466. Paste the map area codes here, so that they will be next to the map area names, through: ‘paste’ -> ‘paste special’ -> ‘transpose’ (to change the orientation to vertical). You should now have two vertical lists – first the map area names and next to it the corresponding map area codes.
3. Just below the header ‘NAMES’, insert new rows for each of the map area names in your data file. For example, if you are importing data for 20 map areas, insert 20 rows. Then copy and paste the map area names from your own data file in the empty space created, in column A.
4. Scroll down to find the map area code corresponding to each of the names just added, and copy/paste this code next to the name in column B. Then delete the entire row with the code you just copied/pasted. (This is to ensure you are only removing rows corresponding to your map areas, and none of the other map area codes/names).
5. You should now have a new arrangement with the map areas which are in your data file at the top of the list. Cut the entire list of map area codes from column B, and paste them back in to the ‘data.csv’ file (starting in column L, using ‘paste special’ – ‘transpose’).
Thanks Frank so much for your response.
I honesty didn't think I would get one, but it's been of great help. Thanks again for your great product and help.
You're very welcome, I hope you succeed in creating your maps.
