Frank,
When starting StatPlanet Plus it reports: error #1502 (time-out) 15 sec.
It only reports this message when using big shapefiles. Is there a map size limit in Statplanet?
Is it possible to adapt the standard runtime to avoid a time-out?

time out error
Dear Parlby,
There is indeed a size limit unfortunately. However, the issue can often be resolved by reducing the map size as explained here: http://www.statsilk.com/maps/useful-free-gis-shapefile-map-tools#reduce-map-size
If this does not resolve the issue, the alternative would be the cut up the map into regions and visualize those seperately.
Best,
Frank
ps The shapefile map code is open source, and there have already been some attempts to resolve the issue. If any actionscript programmer is interested, I can provide further details.
Frank,
I've tried to reduce the map size. Unfortunately the map still seems to be too big.
What is the specified size limit for a map to be read by Statplanet?
Thanks.
There is no specific size limit - usually maps work up to 15 mb, but much smaller maps can lead to a time out. It also depends on the number of map regions. You could perhaps try 'mapshaper' using the highest simplification to see if it works, and if it does, try some lower level simplifications. What is the size of your map?
Best,
Frank
Frank,
The map size is only 3.29 Mb, but has over 2600 regions. Even the highest simplification doesn't work.
Using less regions isn't really an option. Are there any other possibilies?
Best, Parlby
Other than cutting the map up into sections there is no other solution. You can send a message via the contact form (http://www.statsilk.com/contact) if you wish to share the map as an attachment, then I could have a look. But there's little chance I can make it work I'm afraid.
Best,
Frank
Perhaps a stupid question, but how do i add an attachment to the contactform.
Parlby
Hi Parlby,
Sorry I should've mentioned that the contact form is to get in touch via e-mail, and then attachments can be sent.
Best,
Frank
Frank,
Ok, thanks.
I've tried the same map in the webversion. Here StatPlanet works fine. Should there be any difference?
Parlby
Hi Parly,
That's interesting, there shouldn't be any difference. The key is the file 'SHPreader.swf' which reads in the shapefile, but it should be the same file in the desktop and web directory (you can test this by copying it from the web to the desktop directory). There is another version (SHPreader2.swf) which you could try, by renaming it to SHPreader.swf and renaming the original SHPreader.swf. Otherwise I don't see why the web and desktop versions would behave differently - but that's useful to know.
Frank
Hi Frank and Parly,
I'm having the same problem When starting StatPlanet Plus. I wonder if you found a solution.
Best,
Marcelo
Hi Marcelo,
I think this issue was resolved by reducing the map size (please see http://www.statsilk.com/maps/useful-free-gis-shapefile-map-tools#reduce-map-size). Have you tried this solution?
Best,
Frank
Hi Frank,
I used Quantum GIS to simplify may map, but aftter this I found a new error:
Error: Encountered unknown shape type (0)

at org.vanrijkom.shp::ShpTools$/readRecords()
at com.cartogrammar.shp::ShpMap/onShapefile()

at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent()
at flash.net::URLLoader/onComplete()
What could be?

Marcelo
Hi Marcelo,
Did you try following the exact instructions from here? (for this particular unknown shapetype error):
http://www.statsilk.com/support/faq#errormap
I hope this resolves it.
Best,
Frank
