Getting a limit of 200 on indicator list

Hello,
I am using StatPlanet Plus, and have around 270 indicators in the statplanet editor. When i open statplanet.exe only 200 indicators are visible. Is there anything I can do about that? I know from what I read that StatPlanet plus has an unlimited number of indicators-but for some reason they are not showing in the actual .exe document.

Also, when I import data into Statplanet editor and save. and then want to import another different worksheet, it is not working. I have to download statplanet plus again and start from scratch. Is this normal?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Valerie,
Regarding the 200 limit - this is the limit per category. Therefore, if you want to import more indicators, you would just need to create another category for them. See also this document for more details: http://www.statsilk.com/files/resources/Quick_Start.pdf
Regarding the import issue you mention, could you provide more details? Does Excel crash? At which point does it crash, after pressing which button? Which error message do you get if any? Which version of Excel are you using?
Many thanks,
Frank

Thank you for your response.
What I meant is that when I import an excel file into the editor and save and open .exe it works completely fine. but then if i clear data in the editor and try to import another different excel sheet, the data is not uploaded properly, and thus I have to delete the whole statplanet file and re-download it for it to work. is that normal? (i used excel 2010)
Also, concerning multiple categories, is there any way I can create one master excel file that has all the categories in it (for instance each on one sheet in the file) and import that one file all at once (for the sake of having one main file of all the information in the system instead of having several files)

Thank you for all your help.

It is definitely not normal and it is the first time I hear about this issue. However a few users recently had a different Excel 2010 issue which may be related, apparently caused by a conflict between Excel 2010 and a recent Skype update (at least in most cases). More info can be found here: http://www.statsilk.com/support/faq#error1. I hope this might resolve the issue. Do you get an error message, does it freeze, or does it complete successfully but the result is not correct?
At the moment categories can only be imported one at a time. Howver, it is possible to maintain different data files used by StatPlanet with one 'master' file that loads them all. This would enable you to maintain categories seperately. I am not sure if this would help, but more details can be found on p30 of the user guide: http://www.statsilk.com/files/resources/User_Guide_StatPlanet.pdf

Frank,
Thank you for your message.I do not have skype installed on the computer I am using, so I dont think this is what is causing the problem. I dont get an error message, but rather when I import the new file, I get weird numbers on the left column (under category), and under the: 'The following headers or variables could not be identified' (in the import names sheet) I also get numbers with some symbols (+ = etc) instead of country names. Sometimes it is working for me to upload different files after each other, but sometimes it still gives me these wrong results.

Also, I am trying to import a complex file that has for each country, different causes of death stratified by gender and age) I am confused on the kind of format needed for statplanet to recognize every element of the table. Find an example of my excel sheet here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/65263165/ExcelSheet_example.xlsx

I appreciate all your help, it has been an amazing experience learning how to use this fantastic tool.
Thank you!
Valerie

Dear Valerie,
I just looked at your file and noticed one issue which would prevent the import from succeeding. Although the import macro can recognize different data structures, it has one specific requirement: there can only be one country per row. Therefore, in your case there would need to be one row for country A, B etc. and the information that is currently in multiple rows would need to be inserted in the columns for the corresponding country row.
An example structure for importing data can be downloaded here: http://www.statsilk.com/files/resources/data_example_for_import_worldmap...
I hope this helps.
Best,
Frank

Dear Frank,
Thank you for your help. Even if I have only one row of information for each country, I do not want every column to be an indicator, but rather gender (1 and 2) as a category, and age (d0 d1 d2) as a subcategory, and then have causes of death for each age range (as indicators). Is there any way I can format my excel sheet in a certain way for statplanet to recognize it, without having to insert the information manually in the editor?
Thank you!

Dear Valerie,
At the moment StatPlanet can only import indicators and categories/sub-categories need to be defined manually. However it seems to me that in order to ensure all information is imported, you do need to have each column as an indicator - as information can only be displayed in StatPlanet as an indicator (a category is merely a means of organizing indicators - a category itself does not have any information associated with it).
Then afterwards you can restructure these indicators under corresponding category/sub-category headers. The example structure that comes with the StatPlanet Data Editor could help with this. It should not be too much work once you have all the indicators imported. I hope I understood correctly what you are trying to achieve.

Frank

Dear Frank,

I have one question concerning group indicators within a category. I added g=[total, male, female] and it worked perfectly fine. But then I was editing the map legend (by making edits in the appropriate column in the editor), and for total the edit worked, but for male and female the edits did not show on statplanet.exe is that normal? I tried deleting the edit for males and females and seeing if they follow the 'total' map legend edits but they didnt.
Do you have any advice on how to edit the map legend for males and females in the editor for it to be visualized in statplanet.exe ?

Thanks!

Valerie

Dear Valerie,
Thank you for identifying this issue. It does look like the grouping customization is not compatible with customized map legends in the current version - sorry about that. This will be fixed for the next version, which should be released some time next month.
Best,
Frank

Thank you for your response! I am excited to see the updated version.
I have one more question, is it at all possible to add a different description for each country as a small subnote when the mouse is pointing to that country? for instance if my indicator is whether or not a country has a football team, I want to add as a subnote for each individual country, if they do have a football team, when it was founded and when they stopped playing (so basically be able to add a different year range to each country that has a football team).
Hope my question makes sense.
Thanks again for all your help, it is much appreciated.

Hi Valerie,
Yes that is possible, please see pp 31-32 of the user guide (custom mouse over popups).
