Hi, I believe the ability to export maps in larger, better quality is only available with the web version of StatPlanet Plus? I only have the desktop version (as we are a non-commercial charity).
Given the expense of the program, I'd like to clarify a few things. What size and quality can the map be exported to with StatPlanet Plus?
I need to generate an image for an academic poster, which is around 72 inches wide. Obviously this translates as a very large image!
Would StatPlanet Plus be able to generate images of this size?
Thanks, Matt
Hi Matt,
The maximum resolution for the map is around 2500 x 1500 pixels. To test this, you could try StatWorld (http://www.statsilk.com/maps/world-stats-open-data), click on 'Options' in the 'view menu' in the bottom left corner (the 'eye' icon), and in the 'options' panel select the Export tab. The resolution can be increased by moving the image width slider to the right. The image can be downloaded through the download icon in the bottom-left corner.
For a higher resolution image the best approach may be to export it as a vector image, and use vector image editing software to further refine the image and export it as a high resolution graphics. As a vector format the image can be stretched to any size without loss of quality. The steps are explained here, although it may require some expertise/familiarity with software such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape:

Hi Frank, thanks for that. I'm having a go at experimenting with it now, but I can't seem to export as a vector e.g. .svg, .eps etc. Only options are JPEG and PNG files which are raster files?
Matt
Hi Matt,
Sorry if it was not clear, but for the vector approach you would need to follow the steps given in the link in my message above (http://www.statsilk.com/support/faq#vector-export). This is an indirect approach as it exports the entire screen, not just specifically the map, but that is currently the only way to export as a vector (a PDF vector file).

So there is no way of testing this until I buy the product? Because I can't do this with the StatPlanet.html file as the image on the PDF is raster and not vector.
Can I download the StatWorld as a .exe to try it out?
Hi Matt,
There is no need to buy the product. If you follow the instructions in the link it indicates that StatPlanet.exe should be used which is the free desktop version (http://www.statsilk.com/support/faq#vector-export). When exporting the result is a vector image, which can be edited and resized in vector editing software such as Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator. I hope that clarifies things.
Best,
Frank
